Das interdisziplin?re Studienprogramm Urban Design befasst sich mit den komplexen und unaufl?sbar verwobenen sozialen, ?kologischen, ?konomischen, politischen und r?umlichen Dimensionen zeitgen?ssischer urbaner Gefüge. Sie sind der Gegenstand kritischer Analyse und Gestaltung.

Urban Design legt den Schwerpunkt auf die Betrachtung des St?dtischen als einen relational und kontinuierlich (re-)produzierten offenen Prozess, der durch historische Kontingenzen, verschiedene menschliche und nicht-menschliche Akteure, sozio-materielle Praktiken und r?umlichen Vorstellungen gepr?gt ist. Das Studienprogramm Urban Design zielt darauf ab, diese urbanen Konfigurationen und relevante Wissensformen zu verstehen, sie greif- und verhandelbar zu machen und so neue M?glichkeiten zu erschlie?en, urbane Transformationsprozesse zu gestalten.

Urban Design begreift Design(ing) als eine ko-produzierte und -produzierende, fürsorgliche Praxis, die nicht (nur) durch individuelle gestalterische F?higkeiten (spezifischer Wissenskulturen oder Akteur:innen) entsteht, sondern auch durch vermittelte Zusammenh?nge und Abh?ngigkeiten, die sich in und durch st?dtische Alltagsr?ume entfalten. So orchestriert Urban Design die inter- und transdisziplin?re Wissensproduktion in der sozial-r?umlichen urbanen Praxis und Forschung, indem es Lehrende, Lernende, Forschende und Praktizierende aus allen Bereichen der Stadtproduktion zusammenführt. Dabei geht es um die Entwicklung eines belastbaren analytischen und praktischen Rahmens für die Stadtforschung, Stadtgestaltung und die Urbane Praxis der zeitgen?ssischen Stadt.

Studying Urban Design

Studying Urban Design at HCU entails a sound knowledge of research and design practices. The master programme focuses on conceptual modes of working, in-depth analyses, experimental forms of scientific interventions, and process-oriented strategies of planning. The courses convey qualification objectives in the following fields:

Competencies in the application of various qualitative research and analytic methods in urban research and design praxis
Ability to do in-depth spatial analysis and integrative application of scientific and artistic methods and perspectives to justify conceptual action
Competencies in independently handling scientific research
Organization, moderation, and transfer skills
Cultivation of team-oriented, integrative, interdisciplinary workflows
Competencies in cooperative communication skills
Ability to present and communicate one's own concepts using appropriate media
Ability to use analog, digital, graphic, and model-building tools for analysis and concept development
Contemporary urban issues, positions, and theoretical and activist discourses

Course of Studies

The Master of Science programme is comprised of four semesters. It is divided into five teaching areas that consist of compulsory and elective individual modules.

The Urban Design Project forms the main focus of the programme.
The project courses run for one and a half years until the master thesis. The Urban Design Project is supplemented by a broad spectrum of methods and skills: Research and Design Methods and Methodology (Urban Territories) and Urban Discourses (Transformations) are further essential components of the master programme in the first year of study.

Students can choose electives from a broad offer in the teaching area Methods, Tools, and Theory - Specialisation that includes all the study programmes at HCU bbin宝盈体育 and, in this way, focus on their interests. In the third semester, students can choose to study at one of the partner universities of HCU bbin宝盈体育 (optional).

The master study programme is completed with an autonomous academic and project-specific master thesis in the fourth semester. At graduation, students are awarded the title "Master of Science" (M.Sc.).

The Master's program in Urban Design attracts people from theory and practice backgrounds and a broad range of disciplines and professional fields interested in gaining further qualifications in applied urban research and the design of urban environments. Die Absolvent*innen des konsekutiven Masterstudienprogramms Urban Design verfu?gen u?ber eine?hohe Forschungs-, Planungs- und Gestaltungskompetenz und bewegen sich sicher in den komplexen?Aufgabengebieten der Stadtentwicklung und Stadtforschung. Mit dem Abschluss sind die Absolvent*innen qualifiziert fu?r wissenschaftlich forschende und gestaltende sowie beratende T?tigkeiten?in privatwirtschaftlichen Einrichtungen und Bu?ros (bspw. der Architektur, Stadt-, Regional- und Umweltplanung, der Landschaftsarchitektur und -planung), in staatlichen, kommunalen und zivilgesellschaftlichen Institutionen (in den Bereichen von Planung, Beratung und Transfer) sowie in Universit?ten und Forschungsinstitutionen (in Lehre, Forschung und Transfer).

Chamber of Architects

Graduates from the Urban Design M.Sc. program can be admitted to the Chamber of Architects in consultation with the respective organization. A Bachelor's in Architecture, relevant courses at the Master's level, and professional experience are mandatory.
